<image:caption>VANESSA RUBIN - Vocalist / Composer / Educator Revered as both a torchbearer and a storyteller, jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin possesses a voice hailed for crystalline clarity, hearth-like warmth, and playful lioness sass. The Cleveland native brings a wealth of diverse influences to her vocal performance from both the Trinidadian/Caribbean roots of her mother and traditional jazz by way of her Louisiana-born father. Additional homespun influences include the melodic bell tone clarity of a young Capital Records recording artist, Nancy Wilson, the fire of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, the sweet sounds of trumpeter Blue Mitchell as well as her love of the Motown Sound…especially girl groups like The Supremes. Vanessa’s journey to becoming a jazz singer could be said to have begun at an early age. She was characterized by her mother as always being “a very vocal child,” and knew Vanessa would “do something with that big ol’ mouth of hers.” Coming from parents who valued academia, discipline, and hard work, that “something” was meant to be law school. Attaining a BA from The Ohio State School of Journalism in 1979 was not a disappointment. However, her decision to pursue a career jazz singing did come as a surprise. <image:title>Matthew Whitaker</image:title>
<image:caption>MATTHEW WHITAKER - Pianist / Organist / Composer / Arranger “The fleetness of finger, the touch and taste, the grit and grime when he needs it, the lightness and airiness when it’s called upon - Whitaker has it all.” Down Beat “This is an artist who is here for the long haul, whose approach to each instrument is thoughtful and distinctive - melodic and improvisational on piano, complex, textured and harmonically dense on organ.” Splash Magazines “Whitaker has justly gained a lot of recognition and applause at a young age; more, no doubt, is to come.” Jazziz At the age of 23, Matthew Whitaker has lived a musical life richer than artists twice his age. This Hackensack, NJ musician, who started as a promising and prolific prodigy like Stevie Wonder and Billy Preston, became a protean and prestigious professional, who stunned the music world with his limitless virtuosity on piano, keyboards, organ and drums, his compressive creativity as a composer and arranger and his inspiring presence as a bandleader. Hailed as a “genius,” by fellow keyboardist Jon Batiste, Whitaker’s tremendous talents are the subject of wide media coverage, from 60 Minutes and The Today Show to Ellen. Whitaker also has worked with many prominent musicians including Roy Ayers, NEA Jazz Master Regina Carter and James Carter and D.D. Jackson. Whitaker is an artist who knows where he’s going, because he knows where he comes from. Whitaker’s new recording On Their Shoulders: An Organ Tribute, is his soulful, 7-track shout-out to the Hammond B-3 organ pioneers who paved the way for him. They include “The Organ Grinder’s Swing” by Jimmy Smith; Charles Earland’s “Happy ‘Cause I’m Goin’Home,” Dr. Lonnie Smith’s “Pilgrimage,” Joey DeFrancesco’s “In The Key of the Universe,” and the festive “Expect Your Miracle” by gospel organist Elbernita “Twinkie” Clarke of The Clarke Sisters. The recording also contains two in-studio jam sessions: the Latin-tinged, “Yessaah,” and the Afrofuturist, hip-hop-pulsed, “Don’t Count Me Out.” “The idea to do this project [came from] playing a lot of these songs, and listening to those artists growing up,” Whitaker says. “I was listening to Jimmy Smith a long time ago, and I just love the way that his trio interacted with each other musically. I remember my uncle playing Charles Earland for me. And I remember how it just grooved all the way through nonstop. Dr. Lonnie Smith was so down to earth, from the time I met him until his passing. And every time I’d go see him live, he would always play ‘Pilgrimage,’ and he would always invite me on stage to play it as well. I also saw Joey De Francesco growing up, and his wife suggested that I record ‘In The Key of the Universe.’ Elbernita “Twinkie” Clarke was another one that I've had a chance to see live and interact with. I saw her play “Expect Your Miracle” at a concert she did last January. And I was like, oh …I have to do this!” Read More…</image:caption>

<image:caption>G. THOMAS ALLEN - Award-winning Vocalist / Composer / Music Educator On Sunday, November 14, 2021, a Chicago-based vocalist G. Thomas Allen made history by becoming the first male to win 1st Place at The Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark. Allen wowed judges and music lovers with his formidable, yet fluid vocals, as evidenced by the standing ovation he received when he performed his riveting rendition of Errol Garner’s immortal classic, “Misty.” Since that fateful night, Allen has graced some of the most prestigious venues in the world and has honed his vivid voice into the amazing instrument it is. “[Winning the competition] was a beautiful experience,” Allen fondly reminisced, “and it changed my life forever.” Allen’s stratospheric vocals are in full effect on his new recording, Love Affair: Serenades of the Heart; a cool and caressing collection of standards, vocal interludes, and original compositions that narrate and navigate the intricate nuances of romance. The follow-up to his 2020 self-titled album, Love Affair, is a conceptual evolution from Allen’s first record. “The first album is a collection of songs,” Allen says. “I had a lot of melodies, and I wanted to get them on paper and put them out. [The new recording] is a little bit more thematic, more dramatic in terms of the focus. I really wanted to have an album that shows the complexity of love, the good and the bad.” Supported by drummer Jonathan Pinson, bassist Jeremiah Hunt, pianist Dennis Luxion (who worked with Chet Baker) and alto saxophonist Brent Griffin, Allen’s expressive and elegiac vocals on the album’s ten selections ride on a melodic, moving magic carpet powered by intricate and evocative moods and grooves.
